Summary

Andrew Jackson's 1828 election as president was a vindication of his loss to John Quiney Adams in the election four years earlier. In the 1824 campaign. Jackson had received more electoral votes (99) than his three opponents -- Adams (84). William H. Crawford (41), and Henry Clay (37). However, that election was decided in the House of Representatives, where Clay threw his support to Adams, making him the president. In The Election of 1828 and the Administration of Andrew Jackson, historian and Jackson biographer Robert V. Remini explains how the "corrupt bargain" of 1824 became a central issue of the 1828 campaign. Book jacket.
