Author Biography

Dan Gill is a horticultural agent for Orleans Parish: a position he has held with the LSU Agricultural Center/Extension Service for nearly twenty years. Best known to New Orleans area listeners as the popular radio host of The WSMB Garden Show, Gill is featured weekly in gardening segments on The Channel 4 Morning Show. Readers of the Times-Picayune have long benefitted from Gill's weekly column, The Weekend Gardener. Gill received the bachelor and master degrees in horticultural from Louisiana State University. The author has been recognized for horticultural achievement by numerous groups including The Louisiana Garden Club Federation, The Metro-area Horticulture Foundation and the Friends of City Park. Gill gardens in the historic New Orleans neighborhood of Algiers Point. His enthusiastically planted gardens reflect the style and architecture of his nineteenth-century Victorian home. Joe White serves as the LSU area agent in horticulture for several northwestern Louisiana parishes. White has been with the Louisiana Agricultural Center/Extension Service for twenty-five years. A popular columnist, White's weekly garden columns have run in the Shreveport Times since 1972. His gardening information has also been featured regularly on Shreveport radio stations during that same time, and many persons have benefitted from the numerous short courses on various plant topics he has taught on three local (Shreveport) college campuses. White holds three degrees in horticulture including the Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. The author serves as editor of the R.S. Barnwell Memorial Garden and Art Center newsletter and helps coordinate the horticultural segment of the Center's educational program. White has been honored for his gardening accomplishments and service by numerous organizations. He was the 1980 recipient of the Floyd S. Edmiston Award of Excellence in Extensions Programs. White lives in Shreveport where he and his wife and daughter carefully tend their acre garden.
